You should only drive with snow chains when there’s a visible layer of snow or ice on the road. Drive gently, avoiding excessive acceleration and hard breaking, with a maximum speed of 25 kmph (15 mph). Do not use chains on bare roads as this can damage the car, tyres, chains and road. Once the layer of snow has cleared, pull over in a safe place and remove the chains.
